Oil Painting Questions?

Alright. I am completely new at oil painting. No clue how to do it. However, when my grandma passed away, I inherited all of her oil painting 'equipment'. I thought it would be a cool hobbie to do. So, I have done a sketch of what I want to paint for a friend for christmas. Here are my current questions:

-When the paint is black and chunked, would that be expired, or should it be mixed with something?
-Is there a way to oil paint a cartoon character?
-I have many different pieces of painting... stuff. Can you explain what they are for?
-a thing that clips onto a alette that is circular and could hold liquids
-same as above, but has a screw on cap
-the oils
-acrylic paint
-what look to be sculpting tools
-carbon paper

Thanks all. :)

Paint that is black and chunked sounds like it has started to dry in the tube. Best to throw it away

Yes you can paint a cartoon character. Draw what you want to paint on your canvas using pastel pencils (these are pencils that are like artists chalk inside. You can just wipe off any lines you decide you dont' like. Or wipe the whole thing off and then start over.)

The thing that clips onto the palette holds liquids such as oil and turp. The one with a screw on cap is the same but you can put the cap on when done and save the contents

Oils? As in linseed oil, etc.? These are mediums. Hmmm. Here's how it goes, first you draw with the pastel pencil, Then you start by dipping your paint brush in turp (odorless turpentine) or a similar medium then into your paint, gradually you use less turp as you build up layers, going to pure paint and then you start dipping into oil first to do your top layers. You can also mix the mediums directly into the paint if you are doing large areas. It's called fat on top of lean. Oil is fat and turp is lean. If you go the other direction the paint on top dries faster than the paint on the bottom and cracks. (You also use turp to clean your brushes.)

Acrylic paints would be used for preliminary paintings, sort of experiments. Or you can actually do a bottom layer of painting in acrylics and then put oil over it. Typically when you do this (called a Grisaille) the bottom layer is all just in browns or blacks and would be a very thin layer of acrylic paint. Then you would paint over it with transparent layers of oil paint in colors.

What you think look like sculpting tools is most likely palette knives for mixing paint or painting knives for applying paint to canvas.

Carbon paper is for transferring a drawing to canvas. I prefer the method described above.

You might want to take the whole pile of stuff to a local art league and see if they can give you any pointers. Or check into some local oil painting classes. Many art stores also have classes. If you live in the middle Tennessee area I am on the Board of Directors of a not-for-profit art school and gallery that will be opening in the next few months.
